(19) the monument of HRH GRAND DUCHESS CHARLOTTE

Location: at the former customs office on the route de Longwy in Rodange

In memory of: Grand Duchess' Charlotte's flight into exile

Inauguration: 1990

Fleeing from the Nazi invaders, Grand Duchess Charlotte first seeks refuge at the Rodange Gendarmerie and subsequently at the local customs office while the German forces were closing in. About 8am, the customs officer in Rodange received a call informing him that the enemy had reached the Gendarmerie building. The time had come for the Grand Duchess to leave her country.

Standing in front of the steel gate at the border, she bent down to touch the Luxembourg soil one last time before heading to Longlaville. Today, a commemorative plaque commemorates her departure from that particular spot.
